How did you use media technologies and research planning to evaluate stages

Powered by emaze

I used Final cut pro in order to edit the music video. To use final cut pro on a mac i needed a usb that was more of a save space needed to operate on the program. The save space was provided to us by college and its a heavy compact data cube hard drive which we connect to the mac via usb. The things that were on the usb itself were taken from me or my group filming then added to bars then edited. We used our own camera for recording which means we always had a way to record and a memory card full of footage. The footage was tansferd to Thaomys laptop which then connected to the hard drive and then transfer into final cut pro.

How effective is the combination of your main product(video) and ancillary text(digipak and advertisment)

So straight from the video as you can see there's a story being told about me the actor and this mask that is a key object in the product. I kept the song choices inline with the story I created. And allowed this idea to flow onto my digipak.

Completed ancillary and why I picked specific Concepts.

Front:
The front cover mixes the casual grunge with a sketched background. More of these will be explained in my evaluation so this will just be a brief explanation. Il pick out some things that wont be covered in the evaluation. the front covers pretty innocent and i did not want to give too much of the story away.  The whole 2 half's to a coin and split personality i adapted into my digipak. It is easy to create a digipak of just an indie album with basic grunge and a face of the artist.

What makes a good digipak is using a narrative or a symbolic meaning. The indie pop song from Bastille called Pompeii was super successful because there narrative flowed very well and i interpreted it as the main actor just escaping himself and waking up and after running from the truth came to a sense of acception. This is just my interpretation but that being said the whole genre allows its fans to create there own ideas of the music video and album art. I thought this was a good idea and capitalised on it.

Inside:
The inside was just the other side of the open coin. I continued the black lines to drag over but now they were in white not only to show the continual line but also to show a transition from my character being normal to just changing. The texture changed  from being light and split to more dense and at the bottom right there's me putting on the mask becoming something different. There is a spirit shape at the bottom which I use as a logo on the magazine advert sticking with my demon.

Magazine advert:

The magazine itself was pretty simple. The generic picture of what the album actually looks like and a link to the leblake facebook, The most important thing was at the bottom of the page where I put the /Island records page. Main reason is because this company has a very high fan base who wait patiently for information about the new artist and also they write about the artist in detail on the website. What's the point of just buying an album because it looks nice? You need to have background information about who and what the music is. Genre specific can only get so far and after researching about why people buy albums I came to the conclusion its more of the artist than the actual music. I also included the ident for the record label because as I stated before this company logo is recognisable and that alone would be a buying point.

magazine ad

Editing Ancillary Product [4]

This was the last week for me to complete my ancillary work, I finished most of it during the weekend such as the outside album cover and the layout for the magazine advert. However I have not started the inside digipak, therefore this was my main intention as well as completing the magazine advert. I have learnt more skills on Photoshop during the Monday lesson (12/01/2014) such as using the pen tool and experiment with different overlay to blend two images
I have kept the inside of the album cover the same as my original idea with mask as the main image. However, I have changed the design of the CD/DVD and used a different image of the artist in the magazine advert.

Editing Ancillary Product [3]: YouTube Tutorials

From my pitch I have previously presented, I have shown interest that I wanted to create a vignette border for my ancillary product, therefore (during the weekends 10/01-/11/01/2015) I watched Photoshop Tutorials in YouTube to learn how to do this. Below is the video that helped me create my vignette border.

Editing Ancillary Product [3]: Changes

Below are the changes that I have made from my initial plan for my ancillary product:
Summary: I decided not to include one portrait of the artist as I found it hard to appear the mask to melt using Photoshop. Therefore, I decided to go with Kings of Leon album cover (Only by the nights) and split the artist face into two different characters-with and without the mask. The layout would not be similar to Kings of Leon as they had for members in the back, so split the face into four parts. As there was only one artist, I decided to split his face in two using two different characters shown in the music video.

During Thursday's lesson (8/01/2015), I was able to take pictures of the artist and the mask. However, the photographs I have taken were different from my initial idea as I planned to take the photographs in the abandoned area. I spent most of the weekends (10/01/2015 to 11/01/2015) editing both the digipak and the magazine advert.

Editing Ancillary Product [2]: Changes

Originally, my plan was to include the credits in the magazine advert as I saw that the band Bastille did this in their magazine advert. However, this was very unconventional in a magazine advert and since most artist/band in the indie genre did not use this, I decided to delete the credits as it was often used in film posters.

Editing Ancillary Product [2]

First week back from Christmas, I continued to edit my ancillary product. Unfortunately, I still did not have photographs of the location and the artist, therefore I had to create last minute changes from my initial plan in terms of the idea and layout of the ancillary product.

Blog Update Review

After completing my music video, I realised I still continue to be behind with my blogging. Although I have completed and researched a lot into my ancillary product, I have not been updating this or showing evidence for this in my blog work. Therefore, I am hoping to make up for my time, by updating regularly from now on until the end which is 23rd of January 2015. Below a photograph taken for the deadline for my coursework:

Currently, I am doing my ancillary product, however I will start looking at the evaluation question and find different ways to answer them. I believe this will be helpful as I could then work on my blog if I finish my evaluation questions quickly.

Editing Ancillary Product [1]: Christmas Holiday

I started my ancillary product during the Christmas Holidays, below is the image of me creating my magazine advert. The only issue was that I did not have photographs of the artist, therefore I only managed to create the layout using Photoshop.

The hardest part in using Photoshop was creating the letter 'A' into a triangle and the 'E' differently, as I had to draw them from scratch using the line tool.

Update

Happy new year. Back to my blog again. During the holiday i thought of ideas and decided on creating the plan in photoshop elements then drawing it by hand using pen.  Ancillary project dose not have a lot of work left to do and also not a lot of time to do it in. Some of my blog posts need to be finished and evaluation questions need to be done. So good so far.

evidence of work

Today i created my first in depth plan of my album cover. I used photoshop elements and the layer/opacity tools in order to create my image. Some scaling had to be done also through free transform(cmnd+t). I did this in the first and second half in the lesson Mon 5 jan.

This is a flower i got from creative commons and altered it in order to create bigger flower. Im going to separate then edit the flower and use it throughout the images.

advanced plan

When i create my template i have to make sure my idea is in depth. I always make sure the idea is done down to the final line. This first part of my cover was just a few shots of me which i made in photoshop elements on a mac in college.  Iv done this type of style before and will post pictures of me doing it. After creating this in photoshop i will draw it out on canvas paper.

This is the second side of the picture. Just experimenting with space and not trying to overcomplicate the image.

This is the kind of style i was going for. I will be needed 1 more panel and some text to finish off the album cover. Sketched image coming up within 24 hours of this post.

Location of Ancillary Product

For my choice of location, I have chosen to use the abandoned area. Although this may seem very similar to the music video, I will only take photograph of the artist face and the background would not have any buildings like the music video did. The reason why I chose this location is because it creates a poor life style which would relate to the fan's social and economic background and an abandoned area is typical location used in an Indie genre, e.g The Script-Science and Faith.

Planning ancillary: Extra mock up development
